Immigration to Luxembourg for study: admission conditions, university fees, visa
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe, located between France, Belgium, and Germany. Despite its small size, this country has enormous political and financial influence in the region and its capital is Luxembourg, one of the four official capitals of the European Union.
The country has three official languages: French, German, and Luxembourgish. In addition, English and Portuguese are widely spoken. This means that the average Luxembourger is usually fluent in at least four languages.
Due to its ideal setting in the heart of Europe, its high standard of living, its multilingualism, and its multicultural environment, it is a perfect destination for international students.
What are the requirements to study in Luxembourg
Unlike most Western European countries, Luxembourg does not have a single portal for accepting applicants. Prospective undergraduate students must apply to the university themselves (maximum up to three). To learn about more nuances, you can purchase a checklist with all the necessary information. Or seek legal advice.
Admission requirements vary from institution to institution, so check the information on the website of the university of your choice before applying. However, there are two main requirements for foreigners who want to study in Luxembourg:
- firstly, your certificate must be validated by the Luxembourg Ministry of Education;
- secondly, you must prove that you have a satisfactory level of proficiency in English, Luxembourgish, French or German, depending on the study program you are applying for.
Non-EU citizens must also obtain a visa, which must be valid for the duration of their stay in Luxembourg.
Cost of education
Tuition fees vary depending on the course and level of education. On average, you should pay between €400 and €800 per year. For business studies, tuition fees are more expensive, averaging around €4,000-5,000 per year. Affiliates of different international universities may set tuition fees for non-EU students. Consequently, they can vary considerably. For example, The University of Luxembourg charges no more than €200 per semester, while the University of the Sacred Heart, a branch of an American school, charges much more.
There are many scholarships for international students in Luxembourg. Depending on your country of origin and level of study, there are different funding options. To find out what scholarship options are available, check out this database.
How to apply for a student visa
Luxembourg is part of the Schengen area. This means that the visa requirements in all twenty-six participating countries are essentially the same. If you come from the European Union or Switzerland, you can move to Luxembourg without too much trouble and register with the local authorities within 90 days of arrival. If you come from another country, remember the main rule: you must enter the Schengen area via the country that issued your visa. Upon arrival, you must register with the municipality where you are arriving and undergo a medical examination. The process takes about a month.
The student visa allows you to work in Luxembourg for up to fifteen hours per week during the semester and up to forty hours per week (full-time) on your days off. Income will be taxed like residents.
