When making the life-changing decision to move to a new country, it is important to analyse various aspects. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in migration rates. As of 2023, 281 million people live outside their home country.

The main purpose of moving for most migrants is to improve their quality of life and prosperity in a safe environment. Therefore, choosing the wrong country for immigration can have serious consequences. It is important to consider a variety of aspects: economic prospects, quality of life, cultural context and security system.

An analysis of international migration data shows that most migrants choose high-income countries, where there are more opportunities for development and better living conditions. In 2023, 65% of migrants lived in high-income countries, while 31% lived in middle-income countries and only 4% in low-income countries.

The main reasons for international migration are employment, family reunification and access to quality education.

Global data also shows that in 2023, the most popular destination regions for migrants were Europe (87 million), North America (59 million), and North Africa and West Asia (approximately 50 million).

The United States was the most popular country for international migrants, receiving 51 million migrants in 2023. This demonstrates the significant influence of economic, social and political factors on the distribution of international migration and the choice of residence for migrants.

Let's take a look at our ranking of the TOP-10 worst countries for expats in 2024.

10. Indonesia

The Insider's Index rating for expats: 13

Rank in the Global Expatriate Index: 59

Indonesia scores poorly in terms of quality of life and access to healthcare for expats. Although career opportunities are available, they are not attractive. However, expats usually do not face significant social barriers and the cost of living in the country is relatively low.

Indonesia is ranked 10th in the list of the worst countries for expats to live in because of these limitations. Nevertheless, the country has its own unique advantages, such as an exotic culture, rich natural world and access to beautiful beaches. For those looking for high quality healthcare and a comfortable family life, other countries may be more attractive for migration.

9. South Korea

Rank in the Insider's Index for expats: 50

Rank in the Global Expatriate Index: 24

Living in South Korea can be a challenge for immigrants. Finding new friends and maintaining a social life can be challenging given the peculiarities of the local culture. Job offers do not always meet expectations, and the work culture may differ from immigrants' habits.

Financial aspects are also problematic for many, given the high cost of living. Nevertheless, the quality of healthcare services in South Korea is high. However, the overall quality of life leaves much to be desired due to low happiness scores.

These factors make South Korea one of the least attractive countries for expats. Nevertheless, the country offers its own unique advantages, such as a fascinating cultural heritage, high-tech infrastructure and access to beautiful landscapes.

8. Malta

Insider's expatriate index ranking: 46

Rank in the Global Expatriate Index: 33

Malta is not the best option for permanent residence due to the low quality of life. Problems with housing and finances can be important factors to consider before deciding to relocate. The work culture also does not always meet expectations, and employment prospects are not very attractive. Salaries often leave much to be desired.

However, it is important to note that Malta does not create significant social barriers for newcomers. There is a relatively favourable atmosphere for integration into the local society. The country has its own unique advantages, such as a great climate, rich historical heritage and attractive natural scenery.

7. Poland

Rating of the expat insider index: 35

Global Expatriate Index Ranking: 46

Before moving to Poland, expats should consider the real language barrier, which can be a significant obstacle to communication and adaptation. Knowledge of Polish or English can help ease the process of interacting with locals.

Poland is a difficult country to form a social circle of relationships and friendships due to language barriers. However, working conditions in the country are considered fair, which can be a plus for those looking for career opportunities.

The quality of life in Poland is rated as average, and the cost of living is generally acceptable. Potential expats should carefully consider all aspects of life in the country before deciding to move, paying particular attention to language issues and working conditions.

6. Hungary

Rating of the expat insider index: 34

Global Expatriate Index Rating: 48

Hungary has low scores in healthcare and overall quality of life, which is worth considering before moving. Expats often face problems with settling in and understanding the locals due to the language barrier.

The low job index also indicates the challenges that immigrants may face in finding employment in a new country. However, emigrants also note positive financial aspects, including the cost of living and income level.

5. Hong Kong

Insider Index rating for expats: 40

Rank in the Global Expatriate Index: 43

According to the Expat Insider and Worldwide Index ratings, Hong Kong is not the best place for permanent residence. The language barrier and housing situation can be uncomfortable for newcomers. The cost of living in this Asian country is also relatively high.

Career opportunities in Hong Kong attract many expats, but aspects of work culture, salaries, job security and work-life balance do not meet migrants' expectations. Overall, the quality of life and happiness in Hong Kong are relatively low.

4. United Kingdom

Insider's rating of the expatriate index: 43

Rank in the Global Expatriate Index: 40

Over the years, the UK has attracted a large number of people as a country for expats. As a developed nation, this European country can provide excellent career opportunities, but many expats are dissatisfied with the level of salaries and job security.

A particular problem is the high cost of living and poor quality of healthcare. Many expats express dissatisfaction with their financial situation and living conditions. Despite this, the UK remains a popular destination for many immigrants.

3. Italy

Ranked in the Expat Insider Index: 47

Expatriate Index ranking in the world: 37

According to expats, the biggest problem in Italy is working conditions. In terms of the main components of work criteria (career prospects, salary, job security, work and leisure), expats are dissatisfied with the situation on the labour market.

Although the cost of living in Italy is not too high, most expats are not satisfied with their financial situation. Bureaucracy is another problem for foreigners. In summary, Italy has a number of problems that make it one of the worst countries to live in as an expat.

2. India

The Insider's Index rating for expats: 36

Rank in the Global Expatriate Index: 58

India is a country with low scores on the index of happiness, health and overall quality of life. This is especially true when it comes to the environment and climate.

In addition, India is considered an unsafe and chaotic country due to certain social and political factors. A lot of bureaucracy complicates the life of immigrants, which leads to difficulties in their adaptation.

However, expats note the availability of housing and the low cost of living. These advantages allow immigrants to find their place in India, although the overall effect of these negative factors makes it the country with the lowest ratings for living.

1. South Africa

The Insider's Index ranking for expats: 48

Global Expatriate Index Rating: 57

South Africa is indeed considered the worst country for expats. The quality of life here is low, both in terms of happiness and health. In terms of security, it is a really difficult country.

The job prospects in this country are not the best either, with most expats expressing disappointment with their salaries and job security. However, South Africa can offer a low cost of living and more financial satisfaction.
