Brazil plans to restore visa regime for citizens of the United States, Japan, Australia and Canada
Brazilian authorities plan to lift the visa ban for a number of countries. In particular, this applies to citizens of Japan, Australia, the United States and Canada. Find out more about when and why visa requirements were abolished and the predicted consequences of the reintroduction
The Reuters agency informs that Brazil plans to restore the visa regime with the USA, Japan, Australia and Canada in a few days. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country will first inform about the relevant decision, and later it will be approved by the Brazilian government.
When and why were visa requirements abolished?
In June 2019, as part of the Tourism Development Program, the government of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro unilaterally lifted visa requirements for tourists from the United States, Japan, Australia and Canada. According to government research, such a decision should have contributed to an increase in the number of travelers from these four countries. Instead, Brazilian citizens still need visas to visit these countries.
Unfortunately, the COVID-19 epidemic has negatively affected the possible increase in the number of tourists in Brazil. The number of travelers from the US in 2022 was lower than in 2018. The number of Japanese travelers fell by 4.5% in 2019, and only 17,000 Japanese people visited Brazil in 2022.

Predicted consequences of the restoration of the visa regime
Experts predict that the reintroduction of visa requirements will affect tourism between the four countries and Brazil. Visitors will again need to issue a permit before traveling, which may reduce the number of tourists. This decision may harm Brazil's tourism sector, which has not yet recovered from the COVID-19 epidemic. Also, the restoration of the visa may have consequences for Brazil's diplomatic relations with the United States, Japan, Australia and Canada.
