EES system: no more stamps in passports when entering the Schengen area
The European Union is launching a new automated system called EES to control the entry and exit of third-country nationals. Such a step will significantly simplify and speed up border crossing for travelers. Learn more about how the new system works and its benefits
Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new automated system for monitoring the entry and exit of third-country nationals to the European Union. It is more reliable and aimed at simplifying and speeding up the border crossing procedure. The EES is planned to replace the manual process of stamping the passport of travelers entering the Schengen area.
How does the EES system work?
Monitoring the entry and exit of visitors from third countries to the EU with the help of the EES will allow for more reliable identification of persons who have overstayed in the Schengen area. The database of this EES will store all information about the tourist necessary for control - name, fingerprints, facial image, types of travel documents, dates and places of entry and exit, as well as periods of stay in the Schengen zone.
It is planned that the Entry/Exit System will be operational by the end of 2023.
Feel at home in any country in the world! Protect yourself from unforeseen expenses and situations during your trip by taking out reliable insurance.
Advantages of Entry/Exit System (EES)
The main advantages of the EES system are:
- speeding up the border crossing procedure;
- the system will allow to systematically identify persons who have overstayed in the Schengen zone.
Modernization of the visa procedure
Together with the introduction of the EES automated entry and exit monitoring system, the EU leadership plans to modernize the visa process as well. The European Parliament has already approved a resolution on the introduction of a digital Schengen visa processing system. It is planned that a digital system will replace the physical application and visa stickers. The request will be processed on a centralized platform.
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will also be introduced for citizens of countries that are allowed to enter the Schengen area on the basis of visa-free travel. Before traveling, the tourist will need to fill out an application and pay the fee. After processing the application, the traveler will receive the ETIAS permit by e-mail.
