As a rule, the basis for admission to universities in the country is a high school diploma. In some cases, you have to take entrance exams. Education at public universities is free, but it is more difficult to get in.
The most prestigious universities are Cairo, Ain Shama, Alexandria, and Al-Azhar Muslim University.

The cost of education depends on many factors, as well as the university itself. For example, a 1-year bachelor's degree at the American University in Cairo costs $17,000. This is the most expensive university in the country. At other universities, the cost is much lower – around two thousand dollars. However, the most successful studies will be at Egypt's international universities, of which there are only a few. In addition, education there will be in English.
You should start by choosing a university and a program of study. Be prepared for the fact that some universities will give you a written test on your English language skills. Others will require a TOEFL, IELTS, or other language certification.
As in most countries, foreigners must obtain a student visa to study at an Egyptian university. To do so, you must submit the following documents to the Egyptian consulate in your home country:
- Foreign passport and a copy of it;
- A completed application form (you can download it from the embassy's website);
- An educational document;
- Passport photo;
- Certificate of freedom from HIV infection;
- Certificate of enrollment in an Egyptian university;
- Invitation letter from the university;
- A receipt for the course fee;
- Certificate from the bank that will certify
- Receipt for payment of the visa fee.
If the student is under 18 years of age, it is additionally necessary to submit a notarized power of attorney from both parents, the original, and a certified copy of the birth certificate.
As a rule, you have to wait up to 3 weeks for a decision on the granting of a student visa.
Upon arrival in Egypt, every student must register for migration. If you are going to live in a dormitory, its administration will register you. If you will be living in a room or apartment, you must contact your landlord.
Rules of safety and conduct in Egypt
Egypt is a Muslim country, there are special rules for behavior and culture. In particular, it is forbidden to take pictures of state/military-related objects, as well as of people (without their permission).
It is forbidden to be on the street while intoxicated. It is forbidden to offer Muslims alcohol, smoke in public places.
Another practical rule for students living in Egypt is to never drink tap water and avoid getting water in your nose/mouth when showering. Also, use bottled water to brush your teeth.
Don't swim or even walk near rivers and lakes - the water there doesn't meet any standards.
You must remember to dress properly everywhere. Never wear clothes that are too revealing, even if it's hot outside.
